Why Jamaica?, Why now?: By Jeff Wentz, Team Leader for the Jamaica Mission Trip...
In 1995 I felt led by God to go on a mission trip. I wasn’t interested at the time in being a trip leader and just wanted to “show up” and be a part of something that was impacting lives for Christ. I didn’t really have a particular place in mind. After almost a year of looking I found that nobody had a just “show up” program. I was not ready to lead a team and was left feeling like I was on the wrong track. It wasn’t until I met the uncle of a friend that God unveiled an opening. This friend's uncle had been going to Jamaica for 10 years with a group and they welcomed the idea for me to just “show up.” During my trips I stayed at a Mission Camp which is operated by a Missionary Couple, Mack and Marilyn Locklear, in Martha Brea, Jamaica. Their lives and mission work have inspired me in my own personal walk with Christ. The mission camp supports a Church, Riverside Church, an elementary school, Martha Brea Basic School and provides Vacation Bibile School programs for children. They have also raised up, trained and educated a national Pastor who now leads the Riverside Church. They have impacted the town of Martha Brea with the good news of the gospel and are well respected in the community. So Why Now?... This year, Mack began the construction of a 12-bed youth home for teenage boys and girls. Unlike the U.S., Jamaica has no Social Services for teenage kids. Teenagers with no family are alone on the streets trying to survive. This home would house and educate the homeless teenagers of Martha Brea. For this reason we would like to come along side Mack and Marilyn and “Show UP” to help build this home that will transform the lives of children in Jamaica. Our Mission ... Suit Up - SHOW UP - Serve What the team will be doing: * Traveling to Martha Brea, Jamaica. The population is 4,000 people. * Participating in community outreach. * Building a Home for Homeless Teenagers.
Some ways to help from home:Become a prayer partner- As we all know prayer is very powerful. The MOST important part of this trip is the spiritual support from our church family. Ways you can pray include: Jamaican National Concerns: Political reforms that benefit all Jamaicans. Safety for the work site, cement work and roof building. Encouragement of the Jamaican pastors and church. Pray for opportunities to share the Gospel in Jamaica.

However, the team quickly re-evaluated possibilities and found themselves in Miami, Florida. The church in Miami is led by a Honduran Pastor who is a missionary to the U.S. The team helped the church with numerous work projects on their property and made a great deal of spiritual connections. House Painting for One in Need:This year we were pleased to have a large team of people gather to paint a house for someone in need. Three weekends of time were dedicated to scraping, pressure washing, preping and painting the house. This task seemed impossibly daunting to the family in need, yet with many willing hands and smiles, the impossible was made possible. Thanks to all who served so willingly.

Community Garden A team of dedicated people, seeing the need of hunger around us, joined forces to plant a community garden on the church property where produce is being grown to give to the community. Here are some pictures of the garden during the planting phase. Many hours and dedicated hands have been lovingly given to this project.
